Chemtou - City of Marble Mountain

Chemtou or Chimtou is an antique site in northwestern Tunisia.

It is located 20km from the city of Jendouba, near the Algerian border. The ancient Simitthu (Simitthus during the Roman period) is known for its important marble quarries (with a lively play of orange, red, yellow and pink colours.) which were exploited from the 2nd century BC.

Chemtou marble is also known as Giallo Antico or Giallo Numidia. A fine example of this marble adorns the columns in the large square arcade at The Temple of Hadrian on the Campus Martius in Rome. The Temple of Apollo Sosianus (previously known as the Apollinar and the temple of Apollo Medicus also contains column-shafts in different coloured marbles including Giallo Antico, pavonazzetto and portasanta.
